You will learn to appreciate the complexity of responsible fashion development, training a holistic view to understand the human, social and environmental dimensions involved. You will explore the potential of materials and processes to understand how to design textile products in a responsible and functional way.

The course is recommended for young fashion designers, and young professionals close to the product and marketing area in textile or fashion companies, but also for more senior figures who want to get closer to the main concepts of sustainable development.

What is included in the course?

The course has 150 pages of text and four hours of video content arranged into nine sections:

  1. Better Design Thinking focuses on the designer's role in the fashion system:  what role does it play in initiating change?
  2. Challenge The Status Quo: what makes the fashion industry unsustainable?   In this section of the course, we will attempt to define the term "sustainability," highlighting the need of adopting systemic thinking, among other things.
  3. Better Materials explores the complexities of the yarn world and assesses its usefulness. The purpose is to demonstrate how selecting a "responsible material" is not an end in itself but must emerge from our desire to build better systems.
  4. Better Certificates: are certifications needed? This section of the course focuses on the numerous certifications associated with textile goods and processes, with the understanding that none of them, considered separately, can ensure sustainability.
  5. Better Innovative Materials discusses the future of materials and goes into depth on biomaterials, e-textiles, programmable materials, and crypto-textiles. Two Case Studies, Coreva by Candiani Denim and D-Air Lab, an innovative start-up developed by Lino Dainese, add to the discussion.
  6. Better Chemicals examines chemical management within the fashion production cycle and the role of the chemical manager as a key professional figure for systemic change.
  7. Better Processes is dedicated to the examination of natural and chemical dyeing processes, their phases and dyes, integrated with the Case Study Tonello.
  8. Better Making: there can be no environmental justice without social justice. The significance of a living wage, income redistribution, and the notion of fashion as a mission will be discussed in this section.
  9. Better Models focuses on reimagining existing business models in the context of a circular economy. From this perspective, each thing serves society and the environment. Two Case Studies present real instances of circularity: Alisea and Patric McDowell.

At the end of the course, a certificate of participation will be issued. The document can be requested by sending an email at: contact@schoolofwrad.com, with subject "CERTIFICATE SOW".

The members of our team will verify the actual completion of the course and will proceed with sending the certificate within 48/72 hours.
